There’s a quiet truth about professional makeup and hair styling:
The final result doesn’t just depend on the artist. It also depends on how you arrive.
Over the years, I’ve refined a simple preparation guide that I send to all of my bridal clients before their wedding day for them to share with their bridal party who I don't get to directly communicate with leading up to the big day. The prep steps aren't complicated but it makes a significant difference in how your makeup wears, how your hair holds, and how confident you feel sitting in the chair.
Whether you’re seeing us at Prête Studio, hiring another makeup artist for a special event, or having your hair styled for a milestone celebration, these principles apply.
Skin Prep Matters More Than You May Think
Makeup sits on skin — so the condition of your skin that morning matters.
The guide covers:
- How to arrive (clean, lightly moisturized, lightly exfoliated, makeup-free)
- What to avoid the morning of (certain serums and active products)
- Why freshly waxed or irritated skin can cause makeup to look patchy
- What to stop using in the week leading up (retinol, peels, injectables)
- Self-tanner on the face and neck
Small adjustments here can be the difference between makeup that melts beautifully into the skin… and makeup that fights you all day.
Speak Up When You Sit Down
Even the most experienced artist can’t read your mind.
If you love bold brows — say so.
If you prefer soft blush — say so.
If bold lipstick makes you uncomfortable — mention it.
Clear preferences create better results.
The guide also walks through how to bring inspiration photos — including why photos of yourself are often the best reference.
If You’re Having Your Hair Styled…
Hair prep is just as important.
Clean, fully dry hair (ideally washed the day before), no heavy smoothing products, and no flat ironing beforehand if you want volume and hold.
There are a few simple tricks that make curls last longer and they’re easy to follow once you know them.

Keep it saved for the next wedding, gala, headshot session, or dinner out. Good prep never goes out of style.
Calm skin. Clean (dry!) hair. Clear communication.
That’s the formula.
